One of my favorite parts of working in the printing industry is getting to see what happens behind the scenes. During a recent visit to a paper warehouse, I was reminded just how much happens before a single sheet ever reaches a printer.

Did You Know? Paper Starts on Giant Rolls

Paper isn't typically made as individual sheets. At the paper mill, it's produced on enormous rolls that can weigh thousands of pounds.

Those giant rolls are then sent to converting facilities, where specialized equipment cuts them into the sheet sizes used throughout the printing industry. Many commercial papers are converted into parent sheet sizes like 23" × 35", along with many other standard dimensions.

These large sheets are then shipped to paper distributors and warehouses before making their way to print shops like My Paper Box.

From Large Sheets to Finished Products

Once the paper arrives at our shop, we often cut it down even further depending on the project.

A single 23" × 35" sheet might become:

• 8.5" × 11" letter-size sheets

• 11" × 17" tabloid sheets

• 12" × 18" press sheets

• 13" × 19" digital press sheets

• Custom sizes for invitations, greeting cards, notepads, business cards, and more

One large sheet of paper can become dozens—or even hundreds—of finished products!

Behind the Scenes

These photos show part of the converting process, where large parent sheets are prepared before they ever reach a print shop. It's a side of the paper industry that most people never get to see, but it's an essential step in getting paper ready for printing.

So Where Does Paper Come From?

Before the warehouse... before the converting equipment... there's the paper mill.

Paper mills transform wood fibers and other raw materials into the giant rolls that begin the entire journey. It's an incredible process involving massive machines that stretch for hundreds of feet. While I've had the opportunity to visit paper warehouses and distributors, I haven't made it to a paper mill—yet! It's definitely on my printing bucket list, and I hope to share that experience with you someday.
